Budget Meetings

As the school board is developing the 2014-15 General Fund budget, we are holding several community and employee meetings to explain the budget proposal and receive feedback.

The meetings for the North Central area will be held Monday, May 5. Employees are invited to a 3:30 p.m. meeting in the North Central High Leonard Price theatre, and community members can attend a similar meeting at 6:30 that night in the same location.  The meetings for the West Wateree area will be held on Wednesday, May 7 in Lugoff-Elgin High School auditorium at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.  The meetings for the Camden area will be held on Monday, May 12 in the Camden High School auditorium at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.

These meetings will be a great time to have your questions answered so I hope you will be able to attend.  I look forward to seeing you there and talking with you about this important decision.

Teacher Of The Year Gala

The annual Kershaw County Teacher of the Year gala is always a joyous celebration of educators and all that they do. Last night’s gala honored all of our individual school Teachers of the Year, our Principal of the Year, Ms. Karen Bullard from Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, our First Year Teachers of the Year, Keisha Clay of North Central Middle School and Christen Pruett of Wateree Elementary School, and Camden High student Madison Grant, who received the Mary Ann Blaskowitz Education Scholarship.

Obviously, though, the highlight of evening was the naming of Camden High English teacher Rebecca Rundlett as the 2014 Kershaw County Teacher of the Year. Rebecca is a most deserving recipient! The runner-up for this year’s award was Linda Horton, a teacher at Pine Tree Hill Elementary.

Many thanks to Teacher Forum and the many sponsors who make this event possible. Special kudos to Mary Anne Byrd, Mandy Sanders, and Julie Putnam of the district staff for their great work to pull the whole event together. Thanks also to band and choir students from Lugoff-Elgin High School for providing excellent musical entertainment!

A terrific evening!!!

Boys And Girls Club “Youth Of The Year”

I was honored to be asked to participate in the interviews on Friday of the finalists for the South Carolina Boys and Girls Clubs “Youth of the Year.”  I met some inspiring young people who have been tremendously influenced by the work of the Boys and Girls Club.  This is why I am so excited that a Boys and Girls Club Teen Center will soon be opening in the Pickett Building across from Camden High School.
