Dr. Morgan,

I would like to extend my sincere and deepest sympathy not only to Mr. Kats' family but also to both the students and staff at Camden Middle School in the loss of a such a fine person. I had the privilege of first meeting Mr. Kats as a fellow leader with the BSA Cub Scout Pack 224 in Blythewood. If he displayed the same dedication and devotion in the classroom as he did as a fellow den leader years ago, I can assure you the students who had him as a teacher were extremely blessed. The labels honoring his memory and the lowering of the flag at Camden Middle was truly a tribute to Mr. Kats.

Stover Middle charged a $15 fee at regisration this summer. My child does NO extra activities, so this was just a blanket fee. Did the school break the law?

Ms. Nichols - Thanks for your suggestion. I do know that Richland 2 and a number of other districts charge a fee. However, several years ago, the legislators from Kershaw County at the General Assembly passed what is called local legislation prohibiting Kershaw County from charging blanket fees. Essentially, for Kershaw County, such fees are against the law in Kershaw County. I do plan to discuss changing this with our legislative delegation. Thanks again for your comments! FM

Has anyone considered each student paying some sort of school fee for attendiing the school I realize we pay taxes for these areas but I believe school districts in Richland county still charge school fees for those that can finacially afford to do so. Extracurrular activies should also have a fee to those that can afford to pay, We can also form some sort of scholarship for those students that want to play sports and cannot afford to play. As a community we need to find ways to noy only serve our students by maintaining their sports activities but more important maintaining the people behind the scenes such as the teachers and their assistance. I am sure if we all work together we can find some way to help our children and community through these hard times.

I also second the statement that athletics should be cut before teachers assistants, guidance, and media assistants are cut. Those positions are directly related to academics. Sports are wonderful. They are terrific. They often work in conjuction with academics. But they are secondary to academics.

None - Reducing the pay of ADs (and giving the responsibilities to an assistant principals) is one of the options that was and is in front of the board. I would certainly encourage you to share this concern and your suggestions with your Board member. Two of our high schools were each reduced one clerical position, although the remaining clerical staff will still be involved with supporting the ADs, at the principal's discretion. Yhanks for your comments! FM

Why should a football coach/AD have a 220 day contract on top of a teacher contract of 180 days(and only teach one class) and AD stipend of 5,000.00-6,000.00 and FB supplement of 7500.00 -8000.00 . Why are 40 extra days needed at the teacher rate? That can be an additional 300.00 per day times 40 days per three ADs--that is an awful lot of money! .Also, why were game managers needed when there were Assisatnt athletic directors who originally worked the games for the ADS but they were cut during the summer? The savings between Assistant athletic directors and game managers was a mere $5,000.00 or so per year if that. Also, why were game managers cut from the budget last week and now are being paid from gate receipts so they are basically still in existence ?Assistant athletic directors were not offered an option of pay-they were cut .Seems like many cuts are shown on paper that are not "really" cut if money can be "found" elsewhere at the school level. How are we bare bones if we can have money found?Same with the athletic secretaries?Do they still exist or not?Seems one school lost a secretary and the other "found" money.
Also, how in the world does the AD with a teacher pay, FB pay,AD pay and additional 40 day contract pay NEEDA SECRETARY OR GAME MANAGER????????Use an Assistant principal to cover games when AD is not available. The money made on a 220 day contracts and AD supplements by the 3 gentlmen could have paid a clerical position to remain and one less job lost this past week. The above is plenty of "fat" spoken of by County Council.
