Veteran’s Day

I always look forward to attending Veteran’s Day observances around the county.  It’s something I’ve done everywhere I’ve worked.  Although the rain yesterday caused outdoor ceremonies to be moved inside, it was still an inspiring day.  I started with the early morning ceremony at Lugoff-Elgin High School, which is put on by the JROTC unit there.  I was particularly struck by the very moving reading of “The Ragged Old Flag” by Major Gerald Washabau.  The LEHS choir did a wonderful job with the music.  I then went up to Mt. Pisgah, where the entire student body was involved in honoring a large group of veterans from the community and their own families.  What I always enjoy about this ceremony is the slide show of pictures of the veterans from their service days.  Our own Bill Oden was also there in full dress Air Force blues.  He still carries the uniform well!  I also attended the traditional community ceremony sponsored by the American Legion.  The North Central High School Band did a great job with the music.  What is especially moving about this ceremony is the reading of names of Kershaw County residents who have fallen in war.  Last night, I attended the PTA Veteran’s Day celebration at Doby’s Mill Elementary, which included music and speeches by students.  The speeches were truly excellent, as was the music.  Veteran’s Day is truly a special day in this community!

  17. I was very pleased to read that several schools in the district recognized such an important day. My child attends a school that didn’t have any special program, and being part of a military family, I would have liked my child’s school doing something to teach the students about Veterans’ Day and the purpose of it being a holiday. Thanks to those schools who recognized and honored our military for their many sacrifices that they made (and continued to make) for our freedom.

  18. I see that you were very busy on Veteran’s Day. Bethune Elementary also had a wonderful program. Third and fourth grade along with some special guests did a very nice job Honoring our Veterans.
